Want to learn how to create your music and sound design? You don’t have to be a trained musician to get started. However, if you are, you should know that learning to create your music and sound design can be very rewarding, and in turn, help you make a career out of your chosen field. Many music and sound design professionals now make their careers using their knowledge to teach others the art of sound design. Here are some tips to help you choose the best sound design courses.
The first thing you need to do is check out some sound design courses on the internet. The industry norm is Pro Tools, which is generally free to download. If you’re more hands-on learner, then learning other software such as Soft Synths or Patch Editor is an excellent way to teach yourself all about sound design and develop your skills at the same time. There are also loads of sound design tutorials available if you get stuck when it comes to putting things together. My favourite is called Soundcraft Tutorials because they’ve got lots of videos and detailed information that you can watch on your computer.
A lot of good sound design courses will not just teach you about the hardware side of things either. Most people who are starting in this field often focus on sound design fundamentals. Often, you’ll soon discover, it’s not so easy to work from theory! There’s no point in studying digital signal processing and mastering waveform analysis if you don’t know how to process it into useful sounds. Most electronic music production experts won’t start by understanding the foundations of music mixing unless they’re good at it.
One of the best sound design courses I’ve seen was created for an online education platform called Coursera. This course went through a wide selection of topics including signal flow, signal processing, audio editing, and the sound design itself. The best thing about this course is that it goes through each of these topics in lots of tiny units, which makes it very easy to understand and follow. Another advantage is that there are many options in terms of how many subjects to tackle, meaning you can create a personal course to get you started or you could rely on a central curriculum. Coursera also has some great sample projects and demos which you could use whilst you’re studying.
Another course with a good reputation is Skillshare. This course uses a hybrid combination of traditional teaching methods and modern technology to teach electronic sound synthesis and manipulation. Some topics covered are amplitude expansion, waveform analysis and waveform compression, wave masking and signal routing. These skills are essential for anyone working in the music industry as they allow you to manipulate and mix digital signals. If you’re interested in pursuing further sound design and sound synthesis skills, then Skillshare is worth looking into.
LinkedIn Learning is another course that’s worth investigating. Whilst LinkedIn does offer a group of professionals with similar interests, it’s also great for getting advice from industry leaders. Whilst you might not be able to exactly follow the course information online, it’s certainly a lot more reputable than traditional websites like Courses or Skillshare. You can connect with industry experts on LinkedIn and also take part in discussions on various topics.
The best courses I’ve come across all have been created by professional sound designers. Courses that are created by industry leaders are always well worth paying for. This includes sound design courses from specialists who have worked their way up from assistants to directors, producers and music engineers. Someone who has experience is best suited to create an individual course for the specific job role you’re after. Courses like these can be very beneficial as they provide industry-leading sound design techniques, along with techniques you can easily pick up from listening to a whole range of different sources.
Overall, I’ve found that the best sound design courses are those that focus on actual production work. Whether you need to work as a sound designer for music projects, TV, films or corporate presentations, you must gain some practical experience. Some people are great at creating digital sound but struggle when it comes to getting their ideas onto actual audio tracks. By taking a course at a recognised institute, you’ll soon be able to put your ideas to use and start working towards a successful career in the exciting world of sound design synthesis.
